| DETAILS |
This particular breed originated from Germany and dates back to the 17th century. Its name is derived from the German Affe (also known as monkey, ape). The breed predates and is ancestral to the Miniature Schnauzer and Griffon Bruxellois (Brussels Griffon).
Dogs similar to the Affenpinscher type have been known since about 1600 but they were a little larger in size, approximately 12 to 13 inches, and came in colors of tan, black, gray, fawn , gray and tan, and also red. Other common characteristics were white chest and feet. The breed was created specifically to be a ratter, helping to remove rodents from stables, granaries, and kitchens.
Affenpinscher is a loyal companion, watchful of strangers and fearless toward aggressors.
The untrimmed rough, harsh, black coat , sometimes with gray shading, is short and dense on some parts of the body and saggy on others. |
